We have added "Product-specific customer limits" to RuffRuff Order Limits. For each product or variant, you can limit which customers can purchase it by login, customer tags, and customer metafield values.
Key points
- For each product or variant, you can set which customers can purchase it by login requirement, customer tags, and customer metafield values
- Register the customer tags and values used in conditions in "Settings" first. On the product, you choose from those
- Until you choose "Get started" and enable it, your existing "Customer rules" and behavior at purchase do not change
Types of customer limits
"Customer rules" in the side navigation has changed to "Customer limits", and it now opens a page where you choose from two features. "Product-specific customer limits" is a separate feature from "Customer rules", and you can use both.
| Feature | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Product-specific customer limits (new feature) | When you want the customers who can purchase to differ by product |
| Customer rules | When you want to group the target by products, collections, or product tags and set the same conditions |
Conditions you can set
For each product, you combine the following three types of conditions.
| Condition | What you set |
|---|---|
| Login | Choose "Not required" or "Required" |
| Customer tags | Choose registered tags as "Allow" or "Block" |
| Customer metafield | Choose registered values as "Allow" or "Block" |
"Allow" and "Block" are evaluated as follows.
- Allow: Only customers who match any of the selected tags or values can purchase. If you set allow for both tags and values, the customer must meet both
- Block: Customers who match any of the selected tags or values cannot purchase
- Guests (customers who are not logged in): They cannot purchase products where login is "Required", or products that have allow conditions. They can purchase products that have only block conditions
Registering the customer tags and values used in conditions
For a product's conditions, you can choose only customer tags and customer metafield values registered in "Settings". You cannot type them freely in the product settings.
- Customer tags: Register the same text as the tag on the customer. Uppercase and lowercase are not distinguished
- Customer metafield: Register the "Namespace", "Key", and "Type" of the metafield to match, and the values used in conditions. Uppercase and lowercase in values are distinguished
- Display name on product pages: You can set this for each registration if you want. It is the name shown in the product message, and you can translate it
For a customer metafield, you can choose "Use the same metafield to allow and block" or "Use separate metafields to allow and block". The default is "Use the same metafield". The type is chosen from "Single line text", "Integer", and "True or false".
Note on deleting a registration
If you delete a registration that a product uses, it is not removed from the product's conditions automatically. That condition becomes "(not registered)" and no longer matches any customer. Allow conditions then cannot be met by anyone, and block conditions no longer take effect.
If you register the same tag or value again, the original evaluation is restored.
Settings to know first
- Status: Each product has "Enabled", "Disabled", and "Not set". Conditions apply only to products that are "Enabled"
- Restriction method: For each variant, you can choose "Use common setting", "Use individual setting", or "No restriction". "Use common setting" inherits the product's conditions. "Use individual setting" uses different conditions for that variant only. "No restriction" excludes that variant from the limit
How to use
- Open "Customer limits › Product-specific customer limits" and choose "Get started". It is disabled right after initialization
- Open "Settings" and enable "Product-specific customer limits"
- In the same "Settings", register the customer tags and customer metafield values used in conditions, and save
- In the list, set the product status to "Enabled", and set "Login", "Customer tags", and "Customer metafield"
- Save from the save bar shown at the top of the screen
- To use different conditions for each variant, open "Edit variant restrictions", choose "Restriction method", and choose "Save changes". This button is shown for products whose status is "Enabled" and that have 2 or more variants
When you look for a product in the list
In the product list, besides searching by product name, you can filter by collection, product status, product tag, and "Limit settings" ("Configured", "Enabled", "Disabled", "Not set").
How messages are shown
You can set two types of messages. Default text is provided, so you can use it as is.
| Message | Where it is shown | Types |
|---|---|---|
| Product message | Near the cart button on the product page | "Login required only", "With allow conditions", "With block conditions", "With allow and block conditions" |
| Alert message | The cart or checkout when a limit is violated | "Login required", "Matches a block condition", "Does not meet the allow conditions" |
The product message shows one message that matches the conditions of the selected variant. "{{allowedCustomers}}" and "{{blockedCustomers}}" are filled with the display names you registered. The customer tag and value text itself does not appear on the product page.
If there are no display names, "Text when there are no display names" is shown instead. If you leave this text blank, that product message is not shown.
In the alert message, you can insert the product name with "{{itemName}}". You can set messages and display names for each language from "Translate" in "Settings".
For products where login is "Not required", customer tag and value conditions are evaluated only at checkout. This is the same regardless of the "Display timing" setting.
Eligible stores
- Eligible: Stores on the Light plan or the Full plan
- Not eligible: Stores without a paid plan. They cannot enable the feature
- Not covered by the limit: Products whose status is not "Enabled", and variants for which you chose "No restriction"
Impact on existing settings
Existing "Customer rules" settings and behavior do not change. What changes is the entrance in the admin. On the page opened from "Customer limits" in the side navigation, choose "Customer rules".
"Product-specific customer limits" are not applied to purchases until you choose "Get started" and enable them.
What store owners need to do
This feature is added automatically. You do not need to change any settings.
If you use product-specific customer limits, set them up by following the steps in "How to use". After you set them up, check the product page and checkout with test accounts for a customer who is covered and a customer who is not.
